Word Formation
One of the peculiarities of the English language is its capacity to form new words
by adding derivational morphemes (prefixes or suffixes, for example). There are
suffixes that turn verbs into nouns, adjectives into adverbs, and so on. You may
want to ask students to give an example of each group below. This exercise will
increase students’ grammatical awareness.
Noun to Adjective: -ish, -ous, -ful, -ate, -ish
Noun to verb: -ize, -ate
Verb to Noun: -al, -ance, -ation, -er, -ist
Adjective to Adverb: -ly

Possessive Adjectives
A possessive adjective shows possession, or ownership. It is always
followed by a noun. A possessive adjective agrees with the noun or
pronoun that reflects who the owner is—not with the noun it modifies.
